With the upgrading of logistics infrastructure and the optimization of transportation control policies, the efficiency of cross-regional steel transportation across the country has been significantly improved. Multimodal transport modes combining road, rail, and waterway have become widespread, effectively breaking down barriers to steel supply and demand in the north-south and east-west regions, alleviating the contradiction between resource shortages and inventory backlogs in some areas, and promoting a gradual unification of steel market prices nationwide.
Railway transportation, with its advantages of low cost, large capacity, and immunity to weather conditions, has become the preferred method for long-distance steel transportation. Currently, many freight railways have opened dedicated steel transport lines, mainly responsible for transporting finished steel resources from the north to major consumption centers in the south, significantly reducing long-distance transportation costs. Waterway transport mainly serves areas along rivers and coasts, relying on shipping port resources to complete bulk transportation of plate and large-section steel, meeting the long-distance delivery needs of large steel mills. Short-distance regional distribution is mainly achieved through road transport, ensuring the replenishment efficiency of small and medium-sized end customers.
The improved transportation system effectively addresses regional supply and demand imbalances. Previously, the main steel-producing areas in the north suffered from resource surplus and inventory accumulation. Now, multimodal transport allows for rapid delivery to consumption areas in the central and eastern regions. Western regions with strong demand but insufficient local production capacity can also replenish their spot resources in a timely manner. This has led to a continuous narrowing of regional steel price differences and a significant improvement in the previously severe price disparity between the north and south markets.
Simultaneously, improved logistics efficiency benefits upstream and downstream enterprises. Steel mills can expand their sales reach and reduce the risk of regional overstocking; end customers have more diversified purchasing options and can select high-quality, cost-effective steel products; and traders have shorter inventory turnover cycles, significantly improving capital utilization efficiency. In the future, with the widespread adoption of smart logistics systems, steel transportation costs will further decrease, providing a fundamental guarantee for the healthy development of the steel market.
